Stella Maestretti passed peacefully at the extraordinary age of 100. She was a thoughtful and loving woman who touched the lives of not only her family but her many friends as well. She will be remembered for her nurturing kindness, beauty, and her willingness to help others; but most of all for being the best Mom and Nana.
Stella was born in Lehigh, Oklahoma to William and Matilda Furno as the oldest of four children. The family moved to Pittsburg, California and then a few years later to Antioch, in the former area of town known as Prosserville, where she attended the local schools.
She married the love of her life Robert Maestretti in 1938 and enjoyed 69 years in true partnership before Robert passed away in 2007.
The most important thing in Stella’s life was her family. She and Robert raised their three children, Barbara, Bob and Don and, once their children grew up to raise families of their own, her eyes would twinkle with the announcement of each new grandchild.
Stella was very crafty – she enjoyed knitting, crocheting and ceramics, and could be found once a week spending time with her friends at sewing group. She loved to cook, bake, can fruits and make jam to share with her family and friends. Stella would always have some sort of yummy treat waiting and a welcoming smile on her face whenever a guest would arrive at her house.
In addition, she was an active member of the community – Stella belonged to the Delta Bowl bowling team, San Joaquin Dance Club, and Antioch Water Sports Club for many years. She loved the outdoors, enjoying waterskiing, swimming and boating. One of her very favorite activities was camping with her family and friends.
Although missed beyond measure, Stella’s love and fond memories will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
Stella was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Lucy Heggendeffer, and Millie Gill, and brother Lawrence Furno.
Stella is survived by her daughter, Barbara Russo (Ron) of Stockton, Robert (Alice) of Oakley, and Don (Elaine) of Oakley. Her grandchildren include: Michael Russo, Pete Russo, Monica Underwood, Rob Maestretti, Randy Maestretti, Kari Garcia, and Ryan Maestretti.
Her great-grandchildren include: Nick and Alec Russo; Shelly and Katie Russo; Alyssa and Juliana Underwood; Kaia Maestretti; Elias, Ian and Ethan Garcia; and Madison, Marriah and Alexis Maestretti. She has one great-great-grandchild Austin Shackelford.
Family and friends are invited to a reception following the burial.
