Roy James Sherfield

September 10, 1938 ~ May 22, 2022 (age 83)

Roy James Sherfield (Jim)
Our beloved Father, Grandfather, and loving friend passed away on May 22, 2022.  He was 83 years old.
Jim was an amazingly loving father to Carrie, Allen and Michael. He was also the most wonderful grandfather to Brandon, Breanne and Madison and beloved friend to so many.
Jim was born September 10th 1938 in Riverside CA.  To loving parents Roy and Juanita Sherfield. Jim would make Brentwood CA his childhood home town and graduated from Liberty Union High School in 1957.  A few years after high school Jim would serve in the United States Air Force from 1961-1965.
Although Jim was born in 1938 his life didn’t begin until 1961 when he married the LOVE of his life Dorothy Porter. Jim and Dorothy had met at a local dance held in Tracy CA.  It was LOVE at first sight, as for anyone who has heard the story, Jim just had to ask Dorothy for a dance! They would dance together for the next 60 years as loving husband and wife.  They married on August 12, 1961 and would move to Roswell, New Mexico during his military career.
In 1962 Jim would welcome into his world his daughter Carrie. Jim loved being a father and would expand his family once his Air Force career was over. Jim would move his family back to California, this time to Antioch.  Antioch is where he would plant his roots and make his home for the remainder of his life. Jim and his loving wife Dorothy would welcome oldest son James in 1967 followed by their youngest son Michael in 1974.
After serving in the military Jim would go on to work in the airline business. Jim worked for World Airways, Southern Air Transport, and Alaska Airlines where he would retire as an Inspection Supervisor.
His family and friends will have many fond memories that include his favorite sayings, “Tomorrow Never Comes” or the funny way he’d say no…” We’ll See”, him always whistling Zippity Do Dah, or all the practical jokes he’d play.  Jim loved to play jokes on people!!  One practical joke almost got the best of Jim though.  It was famously said that upon proposing to Dorothy, Jim wanted to joke with her. He had Dorothy’s engagement ring and of course wanted to give it to her, but Jim being the jokester he was, didn’t initially ask for Dorothy’s  hand in marriage . He went up to her and asked for his class ring back, saying he was going to need that ring back. Before Jim could ask for her hand Dorothy took off the class ring and threw it at him in anger, she thought Jim was breaking up with her.  He quickly had to stop joking and present her with the engagement ring and explained, I only wanted to switch them!!!
Jim loved many things in life, his 1962 Corvette, collecting old baseball cards, collecting liquor decanters and of course traveling. Whether it was going on one of many cruises to Mexico, Alaska, the Caribbean, or Hawaii, going to the casinos, Disneyland, or driving to Arizona to pick up one of those decanters.  He always just wanted to spend time with his family, they were the most important thing to him. He took pleasure in just having a great conversation, whether over a holiday meal, on a camping trip, or just sitting around. Jim would enjoy his daily conversations he had with his father while he was still alive. Jim made it a routine to stop by his fathers house to have these treasured conversations over a Pepsi and Snickers they both loved. Jim will always be remembered as a loving and supportive family man and for that smile he always had on his face.
Jim is proceeded in death by his wife Dorothy, parents Roy Sherfield and Juanita Hampton, brother Johnny, son Michael, and granddaughter Madison.
Jim is survived in death by his daughter Carrie Jacka husband Rick, son Allen Sherfield and wife Denise, grandchildren Brandon and Breanne, sisters Sandra and Kathy.
