Gene was born Merlin Eugene Taylor in Mitchell, South Dakota, on August 12, 1934 to the parents of Ralph and Ila Taylor. After graduation from High School in Appleton, Minnesota, he enlisted in the military. He
served a total of twelve years - two of those years overseas as a Medical Supply Spec. Gene was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force in September 1961. At that time he married Barbara Penney. Together they raised Barbara's two children, Donna Beth and David from a previous marriage. They were married for 43 years until Barbara's passing in 2004. During those years, Gene worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad and retired after 30 years of service. He also did part time work - building fences and decks and bartending nights at the Boathouse, Beli Isle Club, and the original Sugar Barge on Bethel Island. Gene met his second wife Carol DuVall at Bethel Island functions. The two widowers were married for 13 years.
Gene enjoyed his family, gardening, his dogs, music, the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland As, and just enjoyed life on Bethel Island where he resided for 60 years. He was known for organizing some mighty fine fishing trips out of Santa Cruz in the 1980s.
Gene's daughter Donna Beth (Niki) Reis, predeceased him in 1980. He leaves behind his wife Carol DuVall Taylor, Son David Taylor, Granddaughter Cierra Taylor, Grandson D.J Taylor and Grandson Justin Reis. At Genes request there will be no memorial service. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
