Jose Lohina Avila (age 96) of Antioch, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 26, 2022, surrounded by his family.
Born in the Philippines on November 12, 1925, Jose grew up under the shadow of the Mayon Volcano near the city of Legaspi. In high school, he excelled in sports and learned to pole vault with his brother Frank, using bamboo poles and an open sand pit, which he explained was quite dangerous because the poles often broke. After WWII, he eagerly joined the US Navy and served with pride. While stationed in the USA he met Juanita Cottrill at a USO dance and soon married the love of his life. At the end of his military service, the family settled in the San Francisco Bay Area and he was employed at the Concord Naval Weapons Station until his retirement in 1988.
Jose was a beloved husband, father and grandfather who strived to guide the family on the right course though good and bad times. He loved dancing and singing his favorite songs. Some of his favorite pastimes were going camping & fishing with the family. An enthusiastic sports fan, he loved going to watch his children and grandchildren compete at sporting events. Jose was a talented calligrapher and in his spare time, he loved to oil paint landscapes.
When asked, what is the secret to a long life? He replied, “Just be Happy!”
Jose Avila was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita (Cottrill) Avila, in 2018. He is survived by his son David, daughters Diane (Dorn), Donna-Lisa (Otto), Brenda (Mossotti), and includes nine grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Higgins Chapel, 1310 A St, Antioch, CA, on Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at 2 PM.
