Jessie Edna Swope Raney, of Oakley, California, passed away Monday, December 17, 2018 at the age of 91 at the Lone Tree Convalescent Hospital. She was born August 4, 1927 to Maude Edith and Robert Franklin Swope in Holdenville, Oklahoma. Following the untimely death of Robert in 1939, Maude raised her 10 children teaching them to work hard and learn through adversity. After high school Jessie married Tom Raney and soon after relocated with him and his young son, Darrel, to Oakley, California. They worked hard to build a new life in California, first running a small breakfast and lunch diner for a number of years until Tom got hired on as a chef at the Riverview Lodge, the new “it” spot on the Antioch, CA waterfront. Jessie joined him there soon after, working many jobs at the restaurant including salad and sous chef. She was an excellent cook and host herself, preparing food for and hosting large and extravagant holiday get togethers at her and Tom’s home in Oakley. Following their retirement from the Riverview, they worked together to run their farm, where they had a bountiful almond orchard and a huge garden, growing a majority of their own food. Following Tom’s death in 1999, she ran the house and farm by herself until she decided that she was ready to do some relaxing and moved to Quail Lodge in Antioch, CA in 2006. She had a grand time there, quickly taking on jobs and garnering the love and respect of her fellow residents, always greeting everyone with her big, vivacious, beautiful smile, a wave, and if you were really special, a little wink. She was loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
Jessie was preceded in death by her parents, 4 brothers (Andrew, Richard, Lee Roy and Edmond), 3 sisters (Velta, Bertha and Vera), her husband Tom Raney, stepson Darrel and his wife Sharron. She is also survived by 2 sisters (twins Beulah and Eula) and her grandchildren Bryce and Michelle and her husband Jake, and great-grandchildren Sydney, Casey and Jackson.
