Gloria was born on May 2, 1940, in Pittsburg, California, to Pilar and Bina Ortega. Gloria graduated from Antioch High School in 1958. She married Joseph D. Alanes on April 26, 1959 and together they had three children – Richard, Joseph, and Andrea. Gloria began her career at the Western Cannery in Antioch from 1959 – 1969, she then worked at Mervyn’s in Antioch from 1970 – 1972, she began a new career in 1973 as a Bilingual Instructional Aide with the Pittsburg Unified School District, until she retired in 2008. She loved working with children and served as a Cub Scout Leader for Troop 151 and she was a Brownie Leader.
Gloria was a devoted and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to everyone who knew her. She welcomed everyone into her heart and home and showered those in her life with endless love, joy and compassion.
Her parents, Pilar and Bina Ortega, preceded Gloria in death. She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Joseph D. Alanes; her sons, Richard and Joseph M Alanes; her daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Anthony Putman; five grandchildren (Jordan, Alexandria, Nicholas, Martay, and Gabriela); and five great-grandchildren (Katalyna, Serena, Akilo, Brody, and Stormii-Lynn).
A Celebration of Life will be held at Higgins Funeral Home in Antioch on May 1, from 6-8:30pm. A Mass will be held on her birthday, at Holy Rosary Church in Antioch on May 2 at 11am. Friends and family are invited to attend a reception immediately following Mass at the VFW at 815 Fulton Shipyard Road in Antioch.
