Donald Hartsell

Donald F. Hartsell October, 1925- January 2023

Donald Hartsell, lifelong Musician, Teacher, beloved Choral Director, passed peacefully on January 29, 2023. Don taught music, choir and gave private voice lessons. Notably, Don taught music for many years in various Schools in Contra Costa County. He was Director of Music for the Orinda Community Church and subsequently OCSL Church in Oakland, where he founded "The Clarewood Singers" a 40 member choral group he directed for 26 years.
Don was a World War II Veteran, serving in the European theatre in the U. S. Army.
Mr. Hartsell’s education included degrees in Music from Central Washington University, Columbia University (M.A.) and attendance at the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He was a consummate pianist, who performed well into his 90's. Don is remembered for his devotion to his wife Nanna, also a music teacher, his family, for his humor and laughter, and for instilling a love for music in his performers and audiences alike.
Don was preceeded in death by his wife of 54 years, Nanna Hartsell, grandchildren Gregory Evans and Lacey Gray.
Don is survived by three daughters: Nancy (Doug) Reddin, grandchildren Chris Reddin, Tricia (Brian) Green and great granchildren Jade and Lincoln.
Daughter: Belinda (Glenn) Conyers, grandchildren Tanika Gray and Amelia Gray and son in law, Bill Gray.
Daughter: Dana (Mark) Evans, grandchildren Josh(Nicole) Evans, great grandchildren Jaden, Easton, Peyton and Jamison,
Grandchildren Geoff (Meghan) Evans, great granchildren Zachary, Wyatt and Avery.
