Billy Eugene ChoateSeptember 7, 1935 ~ May 12, 2017 (age 81)
Billy Eugene Choate, of Bethel Island, CA, passed away May 12th, 2017 at home surrounded by family. He was born September 7th, 1935 in Commerce, OK, the son of the late Robert Choate. He was one of eight siblings. He grew up in the Oklahoma Baptist Orphans’ Home where he made car seat covers and practiced upholstery.
After graduating high school in 1954, Billy joined the Navy where he served for four years. After his discharge he moved to California where he met Ruth Anne Wright, whom he married on November 3, 1956. Billy was a foreman or lead worker for Pittsburg and Antioch factories until injuries forced him to retire, starting a career in furniture sales. He was employed at Self Service Furniture for many years and continued to work in the business, most recently at Lanzafame in Pittsburg, CA. Self proclaimed “Furniture Man”, Billy was also widely known as “Papa” and loved chatting with everyone. There wasn't a customer, friend, or stranger that he couldn't engage with. His interests were people and watching the ladies walk by. Always goofy and entertaining, Papa was a favorite to many.
He his survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Harold “Corky” and Nicole Choate of Galt, CA, daughter and son-in-law Patricia “Trish” Choate and Jeff Davis of Bethel Island, five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, and daughter Evelyn St. Onge.
Services will be held at 1pm Thursday the 25th at Higgins Funeral Home.
