Betty Lou Rhynes
September 11, 1935 – June 16, 2022
Our world lost a very special person when Betty Lou (Purdy) Rhynes passed away June 16, 2022. Betty passed surrounded by her family on her late husband’s, Troy Rhynes’, birthday making for a perfect Heavenly reunion.
Betty was born September 11, 1935, to George and Lillie Purdy in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and was the second oldest of nine children. As a young teen, Betty moved with her parents to Rodeo, CA, and attended John Swett High School in Crockett where she met her first husband, Paul Milliken. After graduating, they married and started their family of four daughters: Helene, Darlene, Paulene and Marlene. During their 18 years of marriage, Betty began a 33-year career at PG&E working as a Senior Representative in the Customer Service Department. Betty and Paul divorced in 1971.
On January 6, 1973, Betty married Troy Rhynes - the man she knew she could spend the rest of her life with. Their union brought their grand total of children to 10 with Troy’s children: Bobbie, Sheri, Cathy, David, Donna and Mary joining Betty’s four girls, and there was never a dull moment. They resided in Martinez for many years until retirement, then moved to a farm in Bethel Island where Betty and Troy welcomed family and friends to Rhynes Acres for the next 20 years. While there, they celebrated holidays, family barbeques, and outdoor activities at the farm surrounded by loved ones and all their animals, making for the most memorable years of their life together.
Following the loss of her beloved husband Troy in 1999, Betty began an independent life pursing local activity and making many new friends. Through these friendships, she was kept busy with volunteerism at Bethel Island Women’s Club, Lions Club, and the Red Hat Society. In addition to enjoying her philanthropic adventures with friends, Betty enjoyed playing golf and traveling to new places. In her later years, Betty loved having family and friends visit – coffee chats on her front porch brought her the greatest joy.
Betty is survived by daughters, Helene Cheek, Darlene (Ralph) Dytche, Paulene (Jeffrey) Husen, Marlene (Paul) Peterson, Cathy (John) Munson, and Donna (Art) Bowes. Betty also leaves her brothers, Tommy (Paulette) Purdy, Mike Purdy, Paul Purdy, Johnny Buck, sister Marlene (Rusty) Hill, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. We will miss the way she loved others so freely and without hesitation, her bright smile that lit up every room she was in, and her contagious laughter.
A Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at 10:00am, at Higgins Chapel, 1310 A Street, Antioch CA 94509. A private burial will be held at Rolling Hills Memorial Park, 4100 Hilltop Drive, Richmond, CA 94803.
