Richard Godshall, Co-Founder, Principal and Teacher at Higher Heights Christian School for 22 years
(‘70-‘92), died at his home in Lodi. He was 89. He was born in Harvey, IL to Lloyd and Helen Godshall,
and then moved to Chicago, IL in 1930. He graduated from Fenger High School in 1946. He lived in
California since being honorably discharged from the Marine Corp in 1948 following WW II. He
graduated with his BA and teaching credential from San Jose State University in 1953. Rich married
Katherine Jane Holmes in 1954, the same year he began his career in elementary education. He taught
in schools in California – Westwood, Saratoga, Placerville, San Jose, San Rafael and Pleasant
Hill/Martinez. He was a principal in San Jose, San Rafael, and at Higher Heights Heights Christian School
in Contra Costa County. He and Katherine founded this school in 1970, and he was the administrator for
22 years. He was a member of the Association of Christian Schools International. He retired in 1992 and
lived in Martinez, Mariposa, Walnut Grove, Fallbrook, San Dimas, Antioch and Lodi.
Rich is survived by his son Mark Godshall and daughter-in-law Linda Godshall of Rocklin, daughter
Gloria Hutsell and son-in-law Bill Hutsell of Lodi, daughter Lydia Godshall of Fullerton, daughter Sheila
Mallett of Diamond Bar and fiancée Jiles Smith, daughter Mary Rojas and son-in-law Max Rojas of
Emmett, ID, nephew Christopher and his wife Amy Godshall of Lakewood, CO, and nephew Frederick
and his wife Rachelle Godshall of Tustin, CA. He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren and 9
greatgrandchildren. His wife, Katherine, passed in 1993.
