Katrina Gyi, 81, of Antioch, California, grew the most exquisite pair of wings and took flight amongst the angels on Tuesday, January 16, 2018. She passed away peacefully in Walnut Creek after her battle with cancer and kidney failure. Her beauty, strength, warmth, and love will be deeply missed by all those she has left behind.
Katrina Gyi was born Jasmine Byaw in Ywayet, Burma to Paw Nya and Oren Byaw on May 11, 1936. She won the prestigious title of Miss Moulmein before attending nursing school at Insein Nursing School in Rangoon, Burma. She married Wilfred Ka Gyi on December 23, 1960 in Moulmein, Burma. Katrina and Wilfred immigrated to the United States in 1971 with their four young daughters to live in freedom and pursue the American Dream. In 1978, she gave birth to a son in San Francisco, CA. She worked as a licensed vocational nurse for Delta Memorial Hospital for over 30 years. She was an active member of the church and was a pillar of the local Karen community.
Katrina Gyi is preceded in death by her husband Wilfred Ka Gyi. She is survived by children Evelyn Gyi Rolley of Pleasant Hill, CA, Tangerine (Merilyn) Gyi of San Francisco, CA, Cyi Gyi (Cecilia) Paradis of Falmouth, MA, Maureen Gyi Battis of San Diego, CA, and Theodore Wilfred Gyi of San Diego, CA; brother Richard O’Byaw of Bay Point, CA and sister Barbara Tapa of Bakersfield, CA; grandchildren Jacqueline, Nathaniel, Joshua, Rebecca, Abigail, Benjamin and Wil; great-grandchildren Marissa, Jaxson, and Dominic.
